What: AIM (Academically Interested Minds) is a five-week residential pre-college summer program which began in 1984 and has continued to thrive over the years. The program is designed to augment Kettering University’s efforts to reach a greater number of multicultural students who have a strong interest in the areas of engineering, math, science and business.

What: LITE shows young women how engineers use math, science and technology to solve human problems. What: The Clark Scholars Program is designed to attract gifted students from around the nation. 15. Stanford Institutes Of Medicine Summer Research Program

What: The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.

31. SPARC—the Summer Program on Applied Rationality and Cognition

What: SPARC helps talented high school students apply their quantitative thinking skills to their lives and the world. The curriculum covers topics from causal modeling and probability to game theory and cognitive science. But the focus of SPARC is on applying the same quantitative and rigorous spirit outside of the classroom.

Where/When: SPARC 2018 will be held in the San Francisco Bay Area, and will run in August for roughly two weeks.  More information will be available in early 2018.

Who: You are eligible to apply if you are in high school, or if you are at least 14 years of age and not yet enrolled in college.

35. Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH)

What: The Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH) is a free of cost, STEM-intensive college preparatory program for underrepresented high school students of color.

Where/When: 

  • SMASH Berkeley: June 16 – July 21, 2018
  • SMASH Davis: June 23 – July 28, 2018
  • SMASH Morehouse: June 9 – July 14, 2018
  • SMASH Stanford: June 30 – August 4, 2018
  • SMASH UCLA: June 23 – July 28, 2018
  • SMASH Wayne State: July 7 – August 11, 2018
  • SMASH Wharton: June 30 – August 4, 2018

Who: 

1. Grade Level: Be in the 9th grade at the time of application.

2. Math Skills: Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by the SMASH math assessment (administered to all SMASH applicants in March).

3.  Attend a public high school or private high school via scholarship.

4.  Location: Reside in the United States within 50 miles* of a SMASH site as determined by your zip code — check here to see if you are eligible. (*Applicants applying to SMASH Davis must reside within 75 miles.)

5. Applicants to SMASH: Morehouse College must identify as male.
